Hmm, I think I'd term it a little differently, as it isnt the people I think are broken but the society and it has for so long been so intentionally broken that many of its members do not remember how it should work. Additionally it is a population so propigandized that most are trained to refuse anything but the unconditional meeting of their demands.
The failure to compromise I think is the most damaging because in essence it is what holds a society together most and smooths out the wrinkles of human interaction.
I hear you on that last bit. The entirely tangled mess is tragic and depressing to me.
