I have been working on ideas for the house

and in looking at paint samples and whatnot
the idea of whitewashing the cabinets in the kitchen occured to me.










now generally I am against painting over wood (excluding trim of course)
but I think it might help bring the kitchen back into line with the overall style of the house


thoughts?

yeah I agree, but getting into carpentry is beyond the scope of this project.

yeah for some reason, granted given their taste in decor I am not at all surprised, they decided to design a rustic kitchen (and a bathroom if that isnt totally random) in an otherwise entirely victorian house. Definitely the rustic element has to go, its just not in the immediate cards.

I was pretty much resigned to leaving the kitchen alone as while it isnt to my personal tastes, it is bearable and altering it would be cost prohibitive at this point. I am more looking to get rid of the abhorrent elements of the house and make it bearable than do an overall remodel, afterall I only have a few weeks to get whatever work I want to do, done.

but I was thinking that some sort of treatment (whitewash or otherwise) might help bring the wood in the kitchen more in line with the walls and floor without becoming a major project, just not really sure what.

on that unrelated note, they are quite common up here as the city water is terrible, most people use bottled water for drinking and cooking.

Ah, I see. I think all of the elements are nice in theory, but when you toss them all in the same room, it just doesn't work. (The previous owners failed there!) You could easily fix the room by just chaning one thing, so if the cabinets are within your budget, that would do nicely! I actually really like treated wood if it's done right.

I have had the misfortune of tasting bad city water, so I guess the cooler makes sense. Ew.

it is really more time than budget, although a complete remodel would easily exceed the budget.

I have a few weeks to make any modifications to the house between when we close and when I have to be moved in and ready for fall term. (and so not really able to focus on renovations)

I am focusing on two areas, removing the hideous wallpapers and repaiting, and making energy efficient upgrades throughout the house. So while structural modifications to the kitchen are outside of the scope of what I am thinking for this project, something like whitewashing or staining the wood would be easy to include.

Just need to figure out what exactly would work best in such a situation
