"Here at last
We shall be free;
the Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy, will not drive us hence:
Here we may reign secure, and in my choice
To reign is worth ambition though in Hell:
Better to reign in Hell, than serve in Heaven."

- John Milton, Paradise Lost

i'm taking a class on milton next semester.

in the (admittedly very small) bit of paradise lost i have read up to now, i find it striking that, even in a poem written by a christian who was a big fan of god and all, god comes off like a jerk and the devil is much more sympathetic

I adore Paradise lost
I am rereading it at the moment
hence the quote

I do hope you enjoy it as
much as I do

i have greatly enjoyed the bits of it i have seen

the class will be looking at his other poems as well, which - and again, i am basing this on very little - i do not enjoy nearly as much. his inspiration seemed to be running away with him in paradise lost, also the subject matter of satan and god interest me a good deal more than some dead english guy reflecting on his childhood
