Peculiarities....
Sep. 7th, 2000 09:08 pmI just wrote a seven page email to my mother...
You see, my parents decided when the youngest in my family finally departed for boarding school, that they would take a year of sabbatical.
My father has spent the majority of it in Nova Scotia studying the bagpipes, most peculiar choice, but I respect his dedication to it.
My mother however has been gallivanting around central and south America, working with a group called "Earthwatch" basically she spends 2-4 weeks at a time working on an environmental research project, providing assistance in a variety of task, which helps the scientists running the projects get more done and extend the research grant dollars they have been given. She has spent time studying river dolphins in Peru, otters in Chile, whales and turtles in the Bahamas. All and all not too shabby a time me thinks....
Anyway, I manage several of my family's investment portfolios and have taken general responsibility for most of the family properties.
The only difficulty I have encountered during the past 9 months of this has been communicating with my parents when I felt an consensus was needed before moving forward.
Anyway I received a long letter from said parent units, which made it abundantly clear that they had on the most fundamental level, not comprehended any of our prior conversations. I might have been slightly concerned at this development, but I am confidant that I have not erred once in my judgement. Regardless, I needed to clarify and restate 9 months of communication and information.
*sigh*
my parents are flakes, but I love them anyway.....
in other news...
It looks like my lil wine tasting soiree will go off fabulously. I think I have about 20 confirmed guests and am greatly looking forward to playing the perfect host....
Well my dears, sleep beckons like a wanting lover, until the morrow, I must bid you adieu

deus ex machina
Date: 2000-09-08 05:05 pm (UTC)I am merely a handler so to speak.
I take the information, digest it, make decisions, when necessary consult with the family and provide instructions and frameworks for the professionals to work within.
Besides it is not like they family is going to hand their trusts over for my management, nor would I want them to. I get the IRAs and chair the high-tech vc board, and manage most of the vacation properties. For me its an opportunity to give something back to the family.
What I was referring to was my prior communications with my parents regarding the decisions I had made and on the issues where I felt overall family discourse was needed prior to a decision.
This means that all the decisions which I made and the reasons for making them, where completely lost on my parents.
Of course I had enough support from the rest of the family to move ahead regardless of any their concerns, but I dont like to feel like decisions were made without everyone's input. We may decide to move forward in spite of your input, but I want to know your thoughts before the decision is made.
