Will your homeowner's insurance cover it?

-Shasta, who is currently dealing with a mysterious leak that's ruined a couple of the walls in our closet and is causing water to seep up underneath the carpet and is meeting a claims guy from the homeowner's insurance company here tomorrow

Five grand?

What the Hell are they doing for five grand? My guess is they are 1) doing it immediately, 2) covering losses from the year's downturn.

For that kind of money they'd better be replacing drywall, repainting, and reflooring, brother.

It is 200 bucks for them to come afterhours and write an estimate
another 200 bucks (minimum) for removal of the water

135 bucks a day for each of three industrial dehumidifiers
46 bucks a day for each of 12 high speed blowers
(repeat all of that for 3-5 days)

and another 500 in assorted fees like taking "infrared photographs" and other crap, like equipment pickup.

essentially it is a grand a day for equipment rental with another grand in set up/ take down / clean up costs

or in other words, ass raping

but they guarantee I won't get mold (a problem up here) and promise to pay to remove it if it occurs (a friend of mine recently paid ~15 grand to have "toxic" mold removed) so it is rather a case of damn if you do, damned if you don't

Around here, we just hire a guy to rip out all the drywall, as the mold can't grow on the studs if theirs light, then replace the drywall... If you wanted to be safe, let the studs dry out then paint them with bullseye primer (that shit will kill anything), then replace the drywall.

There'd be issues with getting it done quick, and of course drywall removal, replacement is messy, but I bet'd be less than $5K...
