I went to the national gallery yesterday morning
[with budhaboy and his two sons]

walked in

the security guard asked to look inside my camera bag

I opened it

he instructed me to check it at the coat check
he instructed Budhaboy likewise for his bag

Budhaboy made a reasonable fuss
at being denied the ability
to take a diaper bag into the museum
particularly when the lady in front of us
was able to take her fairly large purse in

apparently
if you are female
and only if you are female
you are allowed to take a small personal bag
into the museum

if you're a guy
tough titties

so he was arguing
[justifiably]
but getting nowhere

its pretty ridiculous especially since
I saw mothers with personal strollers
[diaper bags neatly tucked underneath]
strolling around the museum

anyway

I really didn't want to check my camera bag
so
I let BB wrap up his argument
and walked with him
past the security guards
into the museum
camera bag slung over my shoulder

they didn't even notice

What killed me was not only did you have to have your bag searched... but it then HAD to be X-rayed and stowed in a baggage claim area.

To add insult to injury, the chick at the baggage claim hadn't gotten the memo about the lack of diaper bags being allowed in, and asked the chump at the door about the policy...

All this... for a museum, when the !@#$ing marc trains allow any fool with $7 any sized bag, un-checked, un-xrayed, un-anything to ride to BWI with hundreds of federal employees.

How can I NOT be cynical when the powers that be seem to feel that the places where tourists go get absurd security and thems that live here get squat?
