My father and I
went out to the old french fortress of louisburg
over the weekend

and of course
I snapped some shots

now technically, this is the new old fort
because it has been reconstructed
[mostly using original materials]

and they have a crew of folks
dressed in period costumes
who will tell you about their lives
which is interesting
especially since they are studiously coached
to be ignorant of any technology invented
since their period
so its kinda like a timewarp but, umm, not

but definitely worth a visit
and a good time

Fishing Sloop and White Flag
[is there nothing more appropriate to the period]
[and/or history in than a french fort flying a white flag?]
[I think not]

Outside corner over looking the moat

Fortifications

Passage

Flintlock firing

Ignition

Fire

The Lighthouse at Louisburg, built if my recollection is correct in 1923

:-D re: white flag.

Your photos are breathtaking. My favorite are the last two-- they are therapeutic to look at. I have a real 'thing' for the ocean, so feel free to post plenty of ocean pictures you lucky duck, living where you do. I will of course return the favor by posting photos of my own. namely of cactus. you will be thrilled. :-|

I thought a sloop had a single mast with the foresail attched to the forward stay...

I'm guessing it isn't a ketch, because the forward mast is shorter than the aft...

A yawl, maybe?

hmm... a more careful reading of the entries at wikipedia suggest it's a ketch, as the difference between a ketch and a yawl are the yawl has the mizzen BEHIND the rudderpost.

The shorter mast in the front must be a trick of the angles.
