Feeling under the weather
Jul. 25th, 2005 11:14 amAccording to figures posted in the China Daily newspaper
every two minutes
[or roughly the time it will take me to post this]
12 chinese people attempt suicide
one is successfully
sure some of that is a function of population
but
Suicide is the leading cause of death between those 20-35
thats just fucked up

Date: 2005-07-25 03:43 pm (UTC)this is only going to get worse
decades of the one-child policy + socio-cultural preferences for male children
--> too many males without mates --> social unrest, suicide
there already is a sizable number of chinese men who, failing all else, buy their wives from north korea

Date: 2005-07-25 03:51 pm (UTC)I've no idea what ours are, but I wouldnt be surprised if the attempts vs success rate was even higher here, because we have more of a "cry for help" suicide culture than they do.
China, as a general culture, does not place the same value on human life which we do, which means that there isnt the same degree socio-emotional attention mongering which occurs here.
Or so I'm thinking, could be way off base of course

It is also proof that the Chinese are not nearly as neat and efficient as we think they are.
