did a six hour shift on the hill tonight
the skiing was beautiful
we got about 7 inches of powder
during the afternoon/evening
a little wet/sticky but still mucho fun

was just getting ready to run sweep
[those glorious last runs of the day]
[when we have the hill to ourselves]
when the call came in

ski patrol come in

ski patrol here, go ahead

you're needed at the chalet asap

roger, on my way

zipped down the hill

popped off my skis at the chalet
and walked inside

there was a white male, 26
with a fractured right humerus
[upper arm bone]

it was a simple fracture
[meaning the bone did not come through the skin]
and felt like a pretty clean break

I applied traction to straighten the arm
and put a splint on to imbolize it
then sling'd him up

made him comfortable while he waited for his ride
pretty simple all in all
but I forgot how emotionally draining it is
the guy was a champ
even though he was in severe pain
but
the hard part is that
as careful as you try to be
you are going to cause more pain
when you straighten the arm so you can splint it

its rough
but I got me a nice tall dark and stormy
which I'm gonna relax with
then crash out

I'm filling in a morning shift tomorrow
so I have to be there bright and early

I talked with the patrol leader today
my usual shifts are going to be Sat/Sun 1-6
and filling in as needed since I have a fairly wide open schedule

anyway
I'm gonna play some Civ to unwind
talk to yall tomorrow

p

*sigh* I haven't been skiing in about four years. Went to Breckenridge and Vail. Snowed every day while we were there. Hit the newly opened "Blue Sky Basin" first thing one morning... snowing like crazy. Ungroomed, unmarked, untouched trails. I didn't see another soul, except my friend/ski partner for like an hour.

I got sucked into authoring H's DVD and didn't get around to your statistics problem... I did start it though and had a question:

The chance of winning is it fixed? That is, if you were to buy 1000 tickets, would the probabilty of success remain 1/2000 for each ticket, or would it become 1/3000? I guess put even another way, is a winner guaranteed every drawing?

a winner is guaranteed in every drawing
and the odds are based on the number of tickets sold
so yes if you bought a thousand tickets
it would up the odds to 1/3000

Knock yourself out... Bear in mind, however the hard drive in that case is pushing two years old, and I've already had 1 complete failure from that lot, and am battling with the failure of a second... I'd only put 'second tier' stuff on it if I were you.

and another thing... I totally missed you getting a straight job as a ski patrol... Sound pretty kickass.

heh

its a volunteer gig
but it has its benefits

I've been looking for something for a while now
and when this opportunity came up
it was a good fit
so I went with it

It sounds like a gas, actually... free lift tickets, maybe a little instructing on the side if the student is hot enough? Some excitment...

Hey, I have an idea... You should start working on writing a TV pilot for a show about Canadian Ski patrol dudes... it could be like CSI meets Baywatch meets Dudley doo-right...
