one of the things I have been working on
has made enough progress that I feel I can mention it
and I am quite excited

I am in the process of acquiring a house up here
it is a beautiful 1902 Victorian
three stories with twelve foot ceilings and hardwood floors
[except on the third floor which was servants quarters]

the first floor is communal spaces, living room, dining room, kitchen, etc
the second floor has three bedrooms and the master
(which has one of the two fireplaces, the living room has the other)
the third floor has three bedrooms and needs some cleaning up
if I am going to make it a respectable harem space

anyway we had been haggling back and forth on a few issues for nearly a month now
[price being one of them, they were dreaming with what they were asking]
but I got the call today and they accepted the latest offer

so barring the inspection finding some hideous fault
it looks like we should close mid-June and that will give me six weeks to work on the house
before moving in, as my lease here doesn't expire until the end of august

for the most part the house is in great shape
mostly I want to replace a few windows, convert a room into a library
the third floor into a harem, and one of the second floor bedrooms into a photo studio
remove all their hideous wallpapers and repaint the entire inside of the house

these people had hideous taste

seriously, if I ever suffer an embolism or something
and end up with taste this bad
or worse
end up dating someone with taste this bad
I hope you will kill me and swiftly

anyway here are

I could be persuaded

to consider

such an offer

from a woman of your

virtues

Clearing my throat for what?

There. I made the joke.

ah well

in that case

I do have plenty of room in my harem

Reminds me of the houses in Ann Arbor.

Isn't that fireplace a little close to the bed?

It's rather pretty. Lots of potential in that one. I especially like that living area in the bedroom. But, my god, that's horrible upholstery, and the dwarves on the mantle are scaring me. If you have a proclivity for displaying mythical knicknacks, I might have to de-friend you.

Good luck in closing on the house. Here's hoping that there aren't termites eating through the basement or some such. So, tell us more about this harem concept. ;)

nah thats just an optical trick

there is probably 5 feet or so between the bed and the fireplace.

yeah the house has tons of potential, especially once I get rid of their hideous design choices.

you cant really see it in the photos but the wallpapers they chose are disgusting.

dont worry, kitch and other forms of bad taste are an anethema to my life

Thanks, and I didnt see any warning signs but one never knows, especially with old houses, I have a feeling this will work out though.

I figure with all that space, I might as well put it to good use. Besides it would amuse me to some extent.

*wicked grin*

Amuse to some extent? Understatement, I'm sure. :)

I'd love to see what you'll do to it.

I am sure to post pictures

Very nice...

The tile in the kitchen seems identical to the tile we just put in the kitchen...

From the other pictures there doesn't seem to be a garage... is there room to put on in? Will there be a problem with the zoning rules?

Date: 2004-05-27 09:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] plural.livejournal.com
nope no garage
nor room to add one

I could add a shed for the bike
which is really all I need though

It'd be nice if you could run power out there for an alarm, and lights (a 10x10 would be more than enough room to work on it).

yeah
initially I probably wont
just use it as a winter storage shed
but in the spring that would make sense

How long does spring last up there?

A couple of hours?

Aside from the wallpaper and the red door it's absolutely gorgeous! You've got quite a project ahead of you but it will be fun. The hardware on the bathroom and kitchen cabinets...please tell me you will eventually replace those. The knotty pine isn't so bad I suppose, the mantles are nice (original?), and the wallpaper is going to be a bitch to remove. Beautiful ceiling treatment and baseboard in the living room. Is that entire lot part of the home? Is that the garage I see in the back? wow. fun stuff ahead home it all goes well..*crosses fingers*

Love,
your wife ;)

Date: 2004-05-27 09:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] plural.livejournal.com
yeah the wallpapers are universally hideous
but I got a painter guy who is a pro
I am confident he can handle it no problem.

Yeah replacing the hardware is on the list but will probably wait a year or so. Both the kitchen and the second floor bath are problematic for me, as while it was done with quality, it doesnt really fit to have two very rustic rooms in a classic victorian house, but again, that will have to wait for a larger remodel in the future.

nope, there is a half lot between the house and its neighbor on the right, which is owned by the neighbor and other than their existing garage cannot be developed, so while it isnt ours, it atleast ensures a nice feeling of space.

yeah spent some time today thinking about paint colors and what not, am pretty excited about bringing out the style in the house currently being obscurred by hideous decor choices

Well darling I'm glad you've got your priorities straight. Especially since the 3rd floor will be worked on first ;) The harem will be pleased...

That is unbelievable property. You can't get anything like that in California.

but of course

my parents taught me as a small child
always to take care of those
who take care of you

*grin*

it is a beautiful house

not to mention

you would be sickened to hear how ridiculously little it was bought for.

yeah, it is one of those houses where the charm shines despite their poor taste. I have looked at quite a few houses here and this one was a class above in quality and craftmanship, not to mention being literally in the perfect location.

I wanted to be in the general viscinity of the synagogue and it is directly accross the street, so I am pretty stoked about it.

You know what amazes me?

From the outside, you can never tell that they have those hideous pink couches and egg yellow walls!

But yes, I agree with you - lots of potential!

The Harem idea sounds especially intriguing too! What is your concept on that one? You provide board and lodging to females lost in the wood, and will only accept payment in the form of physical pleasure and such? ;-)

Date: 2004-05-27 10:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] plural.livejournal.com
yeah

and that hallway isnt egg yellow paint

it is egg yellow wallpaper with a hideous design in it
but it didnt come through in the photos

From: [identity profile] gryphon.livejournal.com
Ack. Just saw the rest of the photos, and the rest of the wallpaper in that house is absolutely, insanely, ugly. Or better yet, FUGLY.

Date: 2004-05-27 11:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] plural.livejournal.com
calling it fugly is an insult to fugly people

So I guess I'm evil too.

Hi.

I just read your comments in [livejournal.com profile] missarrow's journal, came here to read, and saw these pictures.

I love this house, both inside and out. Absolutely gorgeous.

holy shit

Now I don't even want to look at what I'm facing living in again!

From: [identity profile] plural.livejournal.com
well if it makes you feel better

real estate is ridiculously cheap up here

that house is twice the size of my seattle house
and cost less than a third of my seattle house

Date: 2004-08-02 01:44 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sickboy.livejournal.com
Yeah, Kendra and I were looking at real estate just outside of Ottawa this weekend and it was unbelievable. The prices there are so much lower than in Toronto but I couldn't possibly make what I am out there so I've resigned myself to the fact that we'll just have to slowly build up to it.
Beautiful house man, beautiful

Date: 2004-08-02 02:11 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] plural.livejournal.com
yeah the difference is insane

of course, if you were considering it, you need to compare the difference in income to the difference in cost, chances are it might still be easier to afford there.

of course, who wants to live in ottawa
*grin*

and thanks, I am happy with it, save the hideous wallpaper anyway
