Parental Units

so

the other day
mother and I had something of an argument

it pretty much ended
with me saying

"You know, I am really not enjoying this conversation"

at which point she hung up

not sounding too good no?

I figured I would give it a day or so
let things cool off and call her back

and went about my day

now in my family
like any other
our disputes can get emotional

and usually if
it isn't calming itself down
and getting resolved

we pull back
think about it
and put our thoughts in writing

which is what she did
the next morning
I checked my email to find a fairly long
and not entirely kind email
detailing her opposition to my position

I took the day to think it over
compose a response
edit it a few times for both clarity and neutrality of voice
and sent it to her

an hour or so ago
I got her response

and in the process
we found a way for us both to move forward
getting what needs to be done done
resolving the conflict

you know
while sure I got my panties in a bunch
for a little while there
looking back on the whole experience
makes me pretty thankful
to have the family that I do

because when it comes down to it
we get shit resolved and bring the focus back
the where it is supposed to be

bringing joy into each others lives.

That is very cool. It's nice when family members can act like adults with each other--it doesn't necessarily make conflicts easier, but I do think it helps build a crucial foundation of respect.
