Owning Mulhowny
Apr. 29th, 2004 07:09 pmI just watched that movie
starring phillip seymour hoffman and minnie driver
it was excellent although pretty damn fucked up
here was a guy which such a gambling problem
that he stole 10.2 million dollars to keep it going
what got to me especially was his devotion to it
he was a pure gambler didnt want alcohol, drugs or sex
just lived for the next hand
the next bet
ten million dollars passed through his hands
and he still drove the same dodge dart
wore the same shabby suit
everything went for the game.
really it is sort of funny that it happened to be on TV
when I was eating
as
I have been thinking a lot about money
recently
or more specifically
peoples relationships with money
on thinking over my particular relationship with money
I noticed something odd
I tend to spend my money doing things
and on consumables
rather than durable goods
other than what I have spent on computers
which was a work related expense
really the only material thing I have purchased
is my ducati
I do not own a big fancy tv
to me it seems to expensive
although when I look back on it
I have dropped over a grand on wine without blinking
but demurred at the thought of
dropping a simular amount of money
on a TV on multiple occasions
a few years back
I spent nearly ten grand on cigars
but kept driving my 1987 honda civic
now granted all of my expenditures
are after my bills have been paid
and my savings/investment targets were met
but I find it interesting
I suppose in a way
consumables seem a better deal
why spend a grand on a big tv
when the one I got for free works just fine
why spend ten grand on a car
when my fifteen hundred dollar one gets me around
but I like my booze and my cigars
I enjoy being able to share them with my friends
and the activities which surround consuming them
in 2001 I spent close to fifty grand
travelling in south america and europe
and other than some good photos
and great memories
I did not buy a single souvenier
sure I like fancy things
I look at the shiny bmw with some envy
but it just isnt important enough to me
to make the choice to have one
