and walking away with your opponent believing they have come out ahead
[diplomacy at its finest]
one must be secure enough to sacrifice a little pride or recognition
but invariably getting everything you desire
will go a long way to making up for it.
anyway
I was a little late arriving in boston
due to a missed connection in Halifax
which forced me to spend the night there
it was almost entirely my fault
yet with a little coaxing on my part
the airline was more than happy
to waive the change fee and give me a hotel voucher
that covered the majority of my hotel costs
amazing what being somewhat imperious
and having the right clothes
[I need travel looking sloppy]
can do when combined with the right keywords
and perspectives
for example a truly frequent flier
understands that the airlines measure
everything in segments
so rather than saying "uh I fly alot man"
one says
"I understand ma'am,
I am quite familiar with the system,
as I fly about 25-30 segments a month"
this immediately raises you from the occasional traveler
who most likely will simply choose the lowest price ticket
the next time they travel even if they aren't particularly thrilled
into the category of business traveler
who not only makes them a lot more money
as airlines tend to rape them
[an example: a business economy class fare nonstop from seattle to new york $2000, the same fare for the tourist around $375]
You see they know that businessmen want to be home for the weekends with their families, and so was born the saturday night stay over law of airline fares. Besides businesses not businessmen pay for business flights, the businesses can write it off on their taxes, and in most cases past the costs off to their customer as well.
unlike the average penny pinching touristy consumer traveler, the business traveler will indeed switch carriers and permanently if unhappy, so from the airlines perspective a couple of hundred dollars out of their pocket is less than they made on that customer for that trip, and losing that customer would mean thousands of dollars this month and each after that. Things like hotel and meal vouchers seem very cheap indeed.
anyway so I ended up leaving Halifax horribly early this morning which prompted a pleasant midday nap, now I have a little shopping to do before dinner.
Unfortunately I had to bump my saturday night plans to sunday night, as I was stuck in halifax. So it will be dinner at the club followed by a "meeting" with the family attorneys and trust folks which is all really just an excuse for me to treat them out to dinner and pump some love into the relationships, make em feel happy and special. That way when I call them up at a quarter to one in the morning with a mistake of someone else's to fix, that because of said error turned a perfectly pleasant situation into a complete SNAFU, they remember that little love I showed em and don't mind sacrificing a little flesh time to help me resolve the crisis.
Got to love familial politics, anyway I hope that I can wrap that up with enough time to squeeze in some general sociability and if I do, I will be in touch. Unfortunately I have to get up around seven am in the morning for a foundation meeting with the Harvard Divinity School which will be incredibly dull, but at least I get breakfast [woot].
then I will be sneaking by the family firm and dropping off some flowers and a day spa gift certificate to the admin who handles most of my stuff in the way of a thank you. praying for my airline ticket to the vineyard to be found or arrive before my flight leaves in the early afternoon, as it was supposed to be waiting at my hotel, but they have not located it yet.
then it is a week of quiet relaxation up on the hill, I am entirely undecided whether I should spend the entire time reading on the beach, the back lawn, or perhaps find a nice spot along one of the nature trails on the property. Maybe I will just have to do a nice mix of the three.
as I said I prolly wont have much of a chance to update while I am there, but you may expect photos upon my return
be well
