so

I was organizing my Mp3 collection

and I noticed that there was no consistency
in the Genre tags

hell one confused schmuck
put the beastie boys
in "Christian music"

Now some genre "labels"
are fairly obvious

Classical
Rock
Jazz
Reggae

but then you have others which
seem to me to be very specific
sub-genres of a great genre

so what I want to know
is what in your opinions
are the top level genre

For example Jazz would be the top level genre of Acid Jazz

I want to keep it fairly simple
so
please let me know what you would consider
are the top level genres?

also
does anyone know of a web site
that lists genre info for various groups?

I tried CDDB but they don't seem
to want to share with the public directly
instead preferring to
brag about all the companies
that sell their products

basically what I need
is something that will give me reliable genre information
for groups that I am less familiar with
so I can still classify them

thanks in advance

genre fever

Porn Groove --Yes!

I would also suggest subcategories in rock for:
Ski Lodge Music
and
Whiney White Boy Bands

heh.

Amazingly I have exactly the same problem with my mp3 collection. My solution was to go to Allmusic guide, look up the band/song and use their classification scheme. That may seem like an insurmountable amount of work, but the reality is it is only a few hundred artists, and many of them you will know immediately by their associations with others.

yeah, that site is pretty sweet.

There are some errors, but it's mostly correct. The other bonus is youru ability to crosscheck songs by bands. You may have noticed that there are some songs that are credited to an incorect artist...

*grin*

for the most part the ID3 tag tool I use is able to correct the artist info automatically, which is nice

That is pretty cool...

I had this idea of putting it all into a DB server and managing it via a html front end at one point... I really should go through the mass again, it seems as though I've gotten stuck listening only to a few bands. When I was building it, I remember thinking, this is about as rich as it gets.

dont know if there is a linux version
but check out moodlogic

it is a pretty sweet organization tool
for mp3 and will also make a variety of playlists based on most imagine considerations

heh.

Between Oliver and work making mp3 playback difficult, I'd gotten out of the habit of listening to mp3s...

You got me wondering about linux solutions, and google led me to rythmbox. The downside to this app is they don't allow id3 tag editing, but they offer a solution.

There is no moodlogic available for linux.

appease my curiousity

if they dont allow id3 tag editing

what exactly is the "solution" they offer

easytag

The whole business, seems a bit like a crutch to me anyway... I mean if you don't know what you are playing, you need more help than an id3 tag can give you.

The only realy benifit I can see for my usage, is when using the mp3 player in my car. There is a display option to show the id3 tag which is a little easier for passengers to read than the path/filename option...

funky.

It was there for a while, then it was gone... not it's back.

the only reason why I care is I'm going to use the thread to download the apps, as I'll never remember otherwise.
