The Game

[plural]

It starts with a phone call
a gentle dance
probing
needs and wants
desires and capabilities

then we meet
perhaps for lunch
speak of the past
make an impression
what can I do for you
what can you do for me
talk of the future
where things might go
every step
a negotiation
a tactic
a ploy
each sizing the other
probing just below the surface
to find out
what exactly
the other wants
or more to the point
is willing to accept

everything is negotiable
nothing in stone
we dance
fleshing out
the terms
of our future
relationship

until
an agreement reached
I sell my soul
and
sign my name
in triplicate

Amazing how it all can start with something as incidental as a phone call... insurance or otherwise. :)

Really? You think a phone call incidental? I have always found them to be rather insidious.. ONe.. the phone calls come at someone else's discretion not your own.. the ring and ring and ring an in inherently obnoxious tone and disrupt everything in your private life. And then the phone call itself - already on someone elses terms.. already selling your time and therefore your assets for someone elses purpose.. even if you want to say goodby - custum dictates that you must wait till the stop talking to politely say goodbye! and whether flirtatious or busy, angry or happy - there is nothing substantial left to you once the call is over.. it is a memory, nothing real.. and highly open to subjective interpretation.

And lastly.. as people say good bye.. and end that exchange.. they linger. "Nice to hear from you.. yes.. well. see you soon, good night. yes.. rest well.. goodbye.. "

Ooh good points.

I hang my head--accepting that I was totally off there.

Though, had I worded my feelings better, I should have said that things like phone calls out of the blue, or a chance encounter, a dropped slip of paper, whatever, can be so incidental, and start something quite the opposite.
