ok folks
a few little guidelines when you are ripping mp3s

let me say first that this only applies in two conditions

1) you intend to share these with other people or on the net
or
2) you are too damn stupid to know if you are sharing them or not

Of course if number two applies to you then I highly recommend euthanasia to rectify that particular issue.

If you are doing it for your own collection then whatever
but for the rest of you,

a few file sharing guidelines

Filenames

Seventy million character long filenames are really annoying.

Do not put the track number, or any other number in front of the file name it just screws up everyone else's file sorting.

Do not put key words, genre or other excessive information

Do not put the date you recorded it or your name or anything that isn't pertinent to identifying the song.

Get the name of the song right, do not add or remove words from the song title.

"Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger in Paradise.mp3" should not appear as "Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger.mp3" nor as "Jimmy Buffett - Cheeseburger Paradise.mp3"

and in no situation invent a name for a song.

"Billy Joel - Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.mp3" should never ever appear as "Billy Joel - Bottle of Red, Bottle of White.mp3" or as "Billy Joel - Brenda & Eddie.mp3"

Capitalize appropriately, capitalize the main words, do not capitalize "an", "the", or "of".

Only capitalize the first letter of a word

"Divinyls - I Touch Myself" should never appear as "Divinyls - I TOUCH MYSELF"
we all know you do, and it is normal get over it

Mp3 filenames should appear in the following format

- - .mp3

Album name is optional but many people like having it there.

If you recorded it off a soundtrack, unless it is a different version, which is only on the soundtrack, leave the album name off.

Spelling

Check the spelling of the filename, make sure you are spelling the Artists name and the song titles correctly

If you are intentionally mispelling it, for use on Napster

Stop

Napster is dead, so mourn, then send some flowers and move on with your life (i.e. get a new client)

Seperators

Use a dash with a space on either side " - "

When a song title, album name or artist name has more than one word, seperate the words with a space

"Frank Sinatra" not "FrankSinatra" or "Frank_Sinatra" or "Frank%@#@#%@#%@#Sinatra"

If there are multiple artists, Seperate their names with either an ampersand "&" or a comma "," use commas for multiples and ampersands for pairs

Do not use some freaky combination of symbols " _&_ " or "-={}=-"which you think looks cool, it does not.

You are just a fucking dumbass.
[Recognize that fact, adjust your behavior accordingly for the sake of the rest of us, i beg you.]

Yes these are my standards, and yes I am imposing them on the rest of you
you do not have to follow them,
for now,
but soon when I have achieved my lifes goal of making stupidity painful,

you will be pretty miserable if you do not.
so why not start now,
so you can be in the habit,
and spare the rest of us a whole lot of grief

Thank you for your time

I'd just be happy if everyone normalized their tracks. I can't stand listening to one track at volume level 1, then the next track I have to pump up to 15 cuz they recorded it too low.

oh and another thing

if you want to get down to personal choice

people should really stop sharing out celine dion songs

I mean what is the world coming too
dont they know that listening to celine dion should be one of those
secretive things that you dont share with the rest of the world

oh where has all the shame gone?

There is two different standards for sharing mp3s. If you are just ripping cds for songs, then your rules are fine.
When I'm searching the net for music, I am not looking for songs, though. I am looking for albums. The standard for ripping and sharing albums is as follows:

Artist Name/Album Name/Track number - Track name.mp3

Breaking things up in directories is important.

Else, you also find naming standards like this:

Album Name/Artist name - track number - Track name.mp3

This works as well, but isn't as good.
