Just call me the grinch
Nov. 1st, 2003 02:14 pmnow
that yall have gotten
all your celebratory stuff
out of the way
I can speak up without being summarily drawn and quartered
but I have never much cared for Halloween
never cared much against either
but
it never
really did much for me
As a young child
the concepts instilled by Halloween
were far to alien to those
instilled in me by my Jewish community
as disguises for the purposes of extortion
where not really a covered topic in my Sunday school class
Halloween was something of a day of mourning
as for several hundred years
non-Jews used the excuse of Halloween disguises
and drunkenness
to rob and murder their way through the Jewish ghettos
not to mention
that seeing as I have never been able to eat sweets
it fairly limits my options
sort of knocks the treat part
of trick or treat
right out
and somehow trick or trick
doesn't seem entirely sporting
[not that such thoughts]
[slowed me down in the least]
[for the later years of my childhood]
[in fact the whole trick or trick concept]
[really was the only part I looked forward to]
I am content to ignore the entirety of it
and go on with my life
wishing those who wish to indulge
much merriment
I think part of my objection
is the obsessiveness of the enthusiasts
you know those people who are so obnoxiously pushy
that even if you wanted to do it in the first place
there is no way in hell you will now
just to spite them
you know the ones who whine that the entire worlds holiday will be spoiled
if you don't don some costume and stand on the front porch waving at the kiddies
Now that isn't to say I haven't gotten dressed up in the past
nor that I will not do so in the future
just that I don't really put much value on it
When I have a Halloween ball, party or the like
to attend, I do indeed seek out appropriate costuming
much like I would for any other social or business event I attend
but
not really cause it is Halloween
then you have my other pet peeve with holidays
of pretty much any sort
decorations
I absolutely despise kitsch
I have my house how I like it
now
you tell me I need disembowel a squash
and display its rotting carcass on my porch
with a candle in the center?
I don't think so
