sex, power and the divinity of paternity... or ... someone has too much free time on their hands yet

first off
let me complain that
spanish keyboards are
a major pain in the ass

i can go on with my day

as i have been under
instructions to rest
i ventured out
into the city today
for the first time today

i was only out for a few
hours to ease some of the
stir craziness that has afflicted me
recently

but I noticed several things

firstly relating to cultures in general
you can tell the amount of power
held by men in a culture
[as opposed to a government]
perversely enough by the
by the length of skirts
worn by women in public

now as a man
i would naturally lean towards the
opinion that the shorter the skirt
the more male-dominated the culture
but i realized today
[most likely because it was the first time]
[i considered it and i had nothing else to do]
[but conduct a visual survey of such matters]

that the reverse is true
look for example at
the most male dominated cultures
of the middle east and even
to a large part the indian subcontinent
the women there are swathed
head to toe in clothing

as women gain power
they shed this clothing
one to piss off the old
power structure of their fathers
and two because they can
use their bodies to gain
additional power.

men of old, whether they
knew that they did or not
understood this

you see us men
and by that i mean myself
and anyone who is willing to
understand and accept their basic desires
[even though our minds]
[can and do override this instinct]
[and many of us live lives ungoverned by it]
are horny bastards who are
biologically driven to spread our seed

we have been programmed by nature
to react to visual stimulus which
lets us know that women are
capable of impregnation
this on the biological level
is explained partly by the fact
that young girls are barely
indistinguishable from young boys

we can do without the obvious
pedophile jokes for the moment
if you please

women however understand this
and in almost every culture
are raised to subconsciously
manipulate this driving biological factor
among males
even in the harsh and restrictive
cultures of the islamic middle east
the women whom are only allowed to
show the tiniest pieces of their bodies
have learned to make
even the most obscene inferences
with those few tools available to them

in the western world this is far more
obvious
women have learned that they
can benefit from the desire or
instinct that men have
by simply appearing attractive
as men will perform feats of
daring and stupidity to distinguish themselves
as potential mates

with animals this is often replaced
with the process of going into heat
and through that by scent
to attract males
males prove their worthiness to mate
either by combat [another trait we humans share]
or by having the most alluring colours

for example the mallard duck
[there are many other examples but this comes first to mind]
the female is cloaked in feathers of a dull brown
to help her camouflage from predators
while the male has a head of bright green
and vibrant blue feathers
this provides two natural functions
one males are easier for predators to
see and thereby through a process of natural selection
only the strongest/fastest/smartest survive
and two allow the female to choose her mate
usually by the flashiest color
[which may explain why]
[men in garishly colored clothes]
[ever get laid]
[of the few that are actually heterosexual of course]

men are by nature of a jealous type
in essence we are biologically programmed
to perform one act
and that is to reproduce
the way that we know we have been
successful in fulfilling that biological need
is to have children
in older cultures before the advent of civilization
when man was a nomadic race of hunter-gathers
where more children were needed
and less was passed on materially speaking
from generation to generation
paternity and even institutions such as marriage
were of far less social value
the clan or tribe operated as a whole
to provide for the whole
as only in groups could the protect and
harvest the food resources around them

in later years with the founding of
settlements and civilization
or more importantly agriculture
land equaled food
and food equaled power
the concept of ownership of land
and inheritance of said lands and power
came into being
at which point paternity became of vast importance
as the man who labored to increase his resources
and as such his ability to support the fruit of his loins
wanted to pass on this ability and strength to his sons
[women were at this point unimportant]
so that they would be more competitive
and his lineage would grow and prosper
women became currency
and in some parts of the world still are
the more chaste a women
the more likely it was assumed that
you could trust that the children she bore
were of your own seed
[and thereby increased her value]
and that your prosperity would go
to help your lineage prosper and not
that of another man

to this day we still revile
the woman who is unfaithful
beyond that of the man who
does the same act
as only in the case of the woman
is the continuum of paternity threatened
[although as our culture becomes]
[more female dominated]
[the balance is changing dramatically]

but i digress
as women gained power and influence
they as is natural with all humans
sought to increase their independence
and stature
they made good use of their
biological assets to level the playing field
and allow their other assets to be brought to bear
where women used to only be able to exert
their influence by spreading their legs
now the simple suggestion of gaining
favor from a woman is generally enough
to motivate a man to move mountains
to provide for the female
under the assumption that
if he is able to provide enough
that the woman will assume that
he is worthy of mating and
allow him to fulfill his biological objective

biologically speaking a man
is made more potent in the eyes of a woman
by two things
his ability to sire children
and his ability to provide said children
with the means to acquire mates of their own
and thereby propagate the lineage of
both the male and the female

this explains both the desirability
of the bucking eighteen year old stud
and the seventy year old moneybag

while i am no longer in the
first category, let me assure you
that i have benefited greatly in the past
from that particular twist of biology
and while i am not yet
in the second category
i have been sufficiently blessed
financially to see the promised land
ahead of me.

which is a stronger persuasion?

if i may dally and entertain you with a anecdote

there is a billboard near my house in seattle
which reads

now personally this disturbs me greatly
but then again I am not
at least yet
a millionaire
and i do suppose looking
honestly from another angle
that if I were
i would merely shake my head
with a knowing grin and
continue on with my day

however
i would wager that
the strength of each consideration
varies from woman to woman
and greatly with age

after all
when you come down to it
most any man can sire a child
but considerably fewer can
pass the test of fiscal stability
[i.e. the continued ability to ensure that her lineage will survive]
in our culture today
marriage is designed to ensure that
a woman who makes a choice to mate
with a male and produce offspring
will not find the support of her offspring
dependant on her continued appeal to the male in question
[i.e. child support and alimony]
however with the changes in our society
which are moving further and further towards
fiscal independence and equality for women
they will in short order as a whole and have already
on an individual basis ceased to require males
to guarantee the continued livelihood of their offspring

so what is next?
without requiring males to support their offspring
but retaining the power to decide which males breed
I would wager that our culture initially and our society as
a whole in the future will become completely female dominated

can you imagine a world where individual males
are not needed for conception but rather the collection of sperm
containing the most desirable biology would be dispersed
to females enmass, for the betterment of the race as a whole?

or will the more aggressive and violent males
feel threatened by the diminishing amount of value
which society places upon them and revolt
casting us back a thousand years
and replacing the yoke of chastity
upon the shoulders of our women

is there perhaps a third option?
one where men and women learn
to share value and power in our society?
perhaps
human nature and the biology which drives it
would say that it is unlikely

in any event i would wager
that the next hundred years
most of which we shall live to see
will let us know that answer

day two in Santiago

so I finally got out of the hotel room
being ill does so terribly bore me

went around to some of the commercial areas
and did some window shopping
to get an idea of the general culture

i think i will like it here
i began the treasure hunt
which i was assigned
i have an object de arte
to locate and acquire
should be quite fun

i am still not quite
back to my normal self
as the drugs do take a bit out of me
[or perhaps that is the illness]
but i have for today been off the painkillers
this has helped my clarity of mind greatly
tomorrow i hope to begin my exploration
in earnest
