No good deed goes unpunished.......

Lets travel back a few weeks to get the whole story.

a supposed friend of mine, was looking for a place to live, he had a job and couldnt find a place. I opened up my home to him, until he could find his own place, or for as long as he liked.

How do I get repaid for this kindness....

I come home this morning at 5am after a 20 hour work day, to find him moved out, no notice, no nothing. Ok so, whatever, its rude but I can deal with it right.

I have to go back to work anyway, just came by to shower and change so I could feel human.

I decided to check my email. I got an email from a friend requesting some information.

I went to open up the database where I keep said information to provide it, and lo and behold. the data base has been deleted.

In fact, I soon discover, the entire contents of my hard drives, with the exception of shortcuts and system files have been deleted.

Then I discover that all the data on my network servers has been deleted.

Not to worry, I have tape backups right...

Right...

I did, apparently all the tape backup have been magnetised and the media is corrupt.

What does this mean?

Three years of business records gone...

all of my personal records, data, files, gone...

Of course, it may be worse, I had confidental data belonging to my clients on the servers.

Databases full of exploitable information.

If he copied the data, as opposed to just deleting it, who knows how much liability I could be exposed to.

Obviously he had been planning this for some time, as he had to crack my NT SAM to get the permissions to delete the files. Of course living in my house, he had plently of opportunity to download the SAM and run all the cracking appz he desired until he got the necessary logins and passwords..

So now I have to call all my customers and tell them that their networks which I designed have possibly been compromised.

Somehow I am really not looking forward to it.

All in all, this will atleast cost me 15 grand, and could potentially, depending if and how the data is abused or depending on what can/cannot be recovered cost me upwards of 250k in losses and actual damages.

Of course, I actually feel rather sorry for him as well, I cant help it, I have no choice but to file charges with the police, which of course will be felonies at the level we are talking.

This will probably mean his brand new career in computer science, is over, I cant imagine a company hiring him after he gets out of jail for electronic theft, vandalism and possibly fraud.

I am absolutly flabbergasted. I honestly dont even know what to think, what he could have been thinking.

I guess this is how favors are repayed these days...

It will be a long time before I probably go out of my way to help someone again.

What a shame...

You know what else pisses me off... on a tangent here..

I was supposed to spend the day volunteering my time to recondition low income housing as a part of a united way project. Instead I get to sit at home, waiting for a locksmith, talking with lawyers, clients and police officers.

What a fucking shame....
