strange days
i tell you my friends
strange days
have been having great difficulty
getting cash
the money is there just
just a pain to get to
so far as I can tell
there is one atm in
san jose where my debit card works
and
silly me didnt think
to bring the pin for my
visa
i had figured that i would
use the visa for hotels and
what not and use the debit card
for cash
things are rather quiet for now
tomorrow i become a
tourist in earnest
last night I went
out to a place called
"El Pueblo"
basically it is a
mall that only has
bars and restaurants
met a fellow from
denver and his
costa rican girlfriend
both were very nice
and it was comforting to
has easy casual conversation
after a day spent going to
a billion banks
and having their atms
tell me to fuck off
the disco where i met them
had two dance floors
one was latin music
and the other mostly american
hip hop
she wanted to salsa
with him on one floor
but he didnt know how to salsa
so he was rather akward
then we went to the
hip hop side
and there the reverse was true
it was quite interesting
to see the difference
where she had been quite
proficient on the salsa floor
she seemed to find the
hip´hop dancing rather ridiculous
and was overly self concious
i hope you will excuse any
typing errors the keyboards here
are very different and I try to
catch it but you know how it is
for example the quotation marks (")
are accessed using the shift+2 key
i will see if I can get a photo
to come out which shows this
the two comforts are
the food and the booze
the food is simple and delicious
for dinner a plate with
black bean, rice and some sort
of curried chicken.
in one case they even
added maybe six french fries
as a garnish or treat
very tasty and
very satisifying
my first banana republic
is has been unusal
i am used to ass backwards countries
but this is not quite that
the best i can think to explain it
would be to picture a
european city
take away half of the grand buildings
add lush tropícal plants
insert a few vacant lots
or shanty style businesses
and the streets are
a cross between a wicked game
of frogger and something out of
grand theft auto
but the beer is plentiful
and several of the local brews
are quite good
of course
to have a real country
you need a beer
an economy,
an army,
these help
thermonuclear weapons
help too
but to be a real country
you must have a beer
so here i sit
drinking a fanta
[i havent had fanta in years]
oh last night
i caught the second half
of that classic matthew broderick
flick
wargames on HBO
it was dubbed in spanish
the voice over for
mr broderick sounded like
he was being repeated
kicked in the nuts
was most humorous
or maybe it was
just the tequila
HBO here seems only
to play either really old movies
or shit that didnt even make it
to being release on video
I watched part of a flic
with christopher lambert
[of highlander fame]
i really dont have a clue
what it was about other than
it was ridiculous
and the soundtrack was so poorly
done that the background music
almost always drowned out any
semblance of dialoge they had
scripted.
I attempted to turn to
the spanish subtitles to
get a clue as to what was
going on which were
some help but in the end
i figured it was pointless
ah well I am off
the national museum
and the butterfly farm
then yet another trip
to the bank
tomorrow I go
on an all day tour
which starts at the
ungodly hour of 6am
on sunday i leave san jose
for the arenal volcano and
hot springs
for two days
then i am off to
monte verde
which is an ecological preserve
for another two days
before transiting to
tamarindo where i hope
to spend a couple of days
eating sand and waves
in some misguided attempt
to learn to surf
before my earthwatch program
begins
I am not sure
if i will find a internet cafe
between here and tamarindo
so for now
i will bid you all
pleasant days
and with fondest regards
take my leave
