I think they (http://www.llamaresource.com/LR/LR.StorySpecific.asp?code=4) are serious. Especially about the spitting:
------ MATING
The male will jump on the female llama's back and the female llama sits down to mate with the male on top of her. During this process, the male makes a sound called "orgling". The mating period can last from 10 minutes to 1 hour in duration. Llamas are induced ovulators, that is, the female will produce an egg 24-36 hours after mating, thus, llamas are very hard to artificially inseminate. The presence of the male on top of the female and the sound he makes all contribute to ovulation in the female llama.
Generally, after breeding, the female can be brought back to the male once a week to test for pregnancy. If she spits at the male after one week, she may be pregnant. If she spits after two weeks, she may be pregnant. If she spits after three weeks, she usually is pregnant. Be aware that she can reabsorb or loose the pregnancy at any time, so if you wish to make sure she is pregnant, testing once a month should be done.
Other pregnancy testing methods, if you do not have a male and are doing outside breeding, include ultrasound, rectal palpation, or blood tests.
