I hosted a New Years Eve cocktail party
bought a case of bubbly for a champagne fountain

whipped up a fabulous dip bar

On the dipping side

I had the following dips

Creamy herb (zesty)
Cheddar and roasted peppers (savory)
Bruschetta (mmm mmm good)
Black bean and white corn salsa (mild)
Jalepeno Salsa (four alarm)
Chile con Queso (a sneaky four alarm)
Creamy Artichoke (served hot mmm)

And the following dippees

Crostini
Pita chips
Old school tortilla chips
A bevy of veggies

For finger foods

Risotto balls
Sun dried tomato tarts
Pesto twisties
Cajun quesadillas (sliced into 16ths)

and of course
a tray of mammoth olives

for dessert

Champagne fountain and a variety of chocolates.

this is the spread minus the hot items
[which were being kept warm in the kitchen]

the dessert table

looks pretty sweet eh?

well it was

quite tasty

especially the spicy stuff

but you wanna know the kicker?

the icing

no

the cherry on the top?

...

wait

...

wait for it

...

k, ready?

nobody showed up.

yup, I had twenty confirmed guests and about fifteen that were maybes or would drop by
and not a soul showed up

so at eleven I said fuck it
locked up the house
and headed out to my friends bar
got really drunk

brought a bunch of my friends by after to eat the food
and we stayed up drinking
well into the next afternoon
was great fun

its rather funny actually because most of them
were on my original invite list
but as they work at bars
were working new years
so I invited other people instead

anyway
I'm not very impressed with the twenty no shows
but
I had a fabulous nye regardless

ouch. I had something like that happen to me. I have a New Years Eve Party, invited at least 30 people and only one couple showed up.

That was the last time I hosted a party for my friends. Now that we're in our new house, I've been tempted to try again, but there is that sad, sad reminder.

Looked like a nice spread. It's making me hungry.

Good show.

I would have shown up, had I been invited, and if I didn't live whatever ungodly distance away that I do.

ouch.

On the upside, you've got mountains of (by now, I'm sure) rotting fruit to lob through thier windows late at night...

it surprised me more than anything...

I'm still a bit sure how to react over it

on one hand, I had a great time and found a good use for the food and bubbly, so I've got no regrets about the way my nye turned out

on the other, I'm rather appalled, my ego and/or hosting prowess aside, it is simple behavior which is unfathomable to me.

I more than made up for it, my nye was great and so far 2006 has been pretty spiffy too, and the food all got eaten so nothing was wasted, but

its just behavior which is unfathomable to me.

rather than being upset with them, I'm just at a loss how to respond.

had you not lived an ungodly distance away, you would most definitely been invited.

and I'd wager that between the two of us, that case of bubbly would have been toast in no time.

Must be a Canada thing... I have trouble with a few sending bogus RSVPs, let alone a dozen... Maybe culturally, everybody and the brother has New Year's parties, and everyone says they'll come, thinking they will, but they get distracted by shining things.

How do you know they didn't show up after 11:00? I'm glad you went out and found your other friends, but you know, it's possible that at least one or two of your original invites stopped by. Were you very specific as to time?
