Let me say this
I chose not to provide commentary on my previous post
to see what form the reaction would take
[yes I know thats called trolling]
[I had a reason for it too]

I do not agree with the content
but it was an excellent example of rhetoric
it selects twelve examples of incidents
which occur over a 34 year period

I can prove anything with the such latitude
or atleast appear to prove it

If I had really wanted to argue such a position
there are hundreds of incidents which I could cite.

Do we [the world in general] have a problem with certain types of Muslim Extremists
yes absolutely
assuming you view events such as those listed in the last post as negative

This argument is offered to support the case of profiling at airports
but it really doesnt support its conclusion

To simplify the argument as such

The premises are:

These events are negative events
These events were caused by Muslim Extremists between a certain age range
Muslim extremists are more likely to commit such acts in the future

Which brings this conclusion:
Therefore we should subject all muslims within that age range to profiling.

The logic is flawed.
fatally so

the correct conclusion is
We should subject all Muslim extremists between a certain age range to profiling

I fully support profiling in the case of armed muslim extremists
I think we should take any and every armed muslim extremist aside
and subject them to additional scrutiny when they pass through security checkpoints

The problem becomes an issue of identification
[although to be honest that problem has existed all along]
[and profiling would not help us identify individual]
[it would just mean that security would ignore good old american white folk]
[like our little buddy timothy mcveigh for example]

How do you identify a Muslim extremist?
Hell how many of you can identify a Muslim
let alone an extremist Muslim.

I have created a little game
I will post the answer in twenty four hours

No way. Moslems come in every shape, size, color, state of dress, and degree of fanaticism. What the typical American recognizes as a Moslem is the Middle Eastern-looking man with a thick bristly moustache or the woman wearing a head-covering, and I for one know that's 3/5 of their population at best. Besides, even if I could do a positive ID on a Moslem, how could I possibly do a positive ID on them as a terrorist?

A perfect example of why you can't really try to pick a Muslim by face:

I work with a girl who is from South Africa, Capetown originally. She's caucasian, with tanned skin and blonde hair and blue eyes. She's a smart, intelligent, lovely woman... and she's a converted Muslim.

Her husband is of Pakistani descent, and also Muslim... but she didn't convert for the sake of marrying him. She researched the religion, and the more she read the more she liked, so she converted a few years ago... She isn't extremely orthodox (as such) though, and she doesn't wear a headscarf or anything else that may mark her as Muslim (other than a necklace with Arabic writing). She does not look like your average Muslim.

In an amusing set of events, she once told me she didn't drink... this was before I knew she was Muslim. So I asked her why, and she replied 'Because I'm a lesbian!'. I was taken aback, and asked 'Does your husband know?' ... all the while thinking 'but I know plenty of lesbians who drink...' She looked a bit surprised and answered 'Of course he does...'

Eventually, the concept got to the point of enough not-making-sense that I had to ask her... 'What did you say again?' She said, 'I said, I don't drink because I'm a Muslim...'

The music in the store is a little loud. ;)

It's become a running joke between us, since then.

the 3rd guy looks like the gun nut from the tremors movies...if i'm running airport security i definitely search that guy

seriously though, it's absolutely impossible to tell a person's religion, politics, and such by their face alone...well, except for hindus
give me some info on their travels, schooling, jobs, and what organizations they belong to, and i'll tell you which ones i'd research and monitor in an attempt to protect our national security

if i'm running airport security, my people will continue random searches, but be instructed to pick more arabic and white males than anyone else...and hispanics least of all
without more information [and if i'm in charge of security you can be damn sure i read every bit of info i can get on recent (40 years) terrorist attacks and attempts, especially those involving airplanes...plus info on all the militant extremist groups in operation, especially those operating on this continent] i can only act on what i know so far
1. muslim extremists are willing to commit suicide attacks on my country
2. young white american and european youth sympathize with every group on earth they consider oppressed, and are likely to take action in support of these groups

i'm sorry... i know i've lived a sheltered life in which i've met a limited amount of people, but are there really that many people on livejournal who would disagree with you or even come up with an idea that doesn't generally parallel your point?
well... mine is sort of a moot point. you've made a very good one. it's distressing that more people don't automatically know it... or something...

profiling is a joke.
