Jul. 24th, 2000 07:14 pmOn my brief drive home it occured to me...
We have a strange pact, you, my reader and I,
I bear my soul
Yet mask my face...
My words drift within a mood of acedia...
Bliss pure bliss...
Ignorance is bliss
Your ignorance is my bliss,
I am no less a coward, probably more so in fact, but I am unknown, and obscurity makes all men brave.
Then again, I have the luxury of sitting at my desk,
dawdling for hours,
spewing forth trival trash carefully crafted to mimic profound thought.
My life is spent, in the creation of nothing, my daily toil or lack there of, creates nothing, how many of us actually create a product necessary for existance. Why does the farmer who grows the food I rely on, flounder in debt....
I have noticed something as well, the more concrete your position, the more definable your responsibilities, and the more valuable your product, the less value society places on you.
Stockbrokers trade daily in imaginary numbers, creating vast sums of imaginary wealth.
Lawyers move swiftly through heavy books of artificial justice, swaying the path of humanity with greed and false wisdom.
Executives post motivational posters, have pep rallies, make decisions about lives which are merely indistinguishable numbers, move a series of numbers from one column to another....
Bankers extend credit which is a artificial entity which allows people and companies to continue buying things they dont need, with money they dont have.
Look at the Dot.Com revolution, companies and executives worth billions of dollars, most of whom do not even produce a semblance of a product, let alone even approach profitability.
The most valued and indeed most important profession in our world is Marketing, those people who toil day and night to convince us to buy thing we dont need....
No, I am mistaken, we desperatly need those products which are pitched to us day and night, on billboards, in letters, emails and on cellphones... Why do we need them you may ask? I dont need a flow-bee hair cutting system, or bowflex deluxe home excerise system.
You need them more than you think.
perhaps you will never use that flow-bee or that bowflex, but you need them just the same, if we all stopped buying things we didnt need, our virtual economy would wither.....
Whether you produce something that the rest of us dont need, or you support the lives of people who produce things we dont need. It matters not, in the end, we are all clinging desperatly to the flow-bees and bowflexes of the world, stealing from peter to pay paul, in an endless loop, our economy grows of scale only because we become more efficient at taking more money in exchange for less nothing than the previous round.
I constantly amaze myself by my seemingly endless ability vomit words into paragraphs.
The mind is its own place, and in itself / Can make a heaven of hell, a hell
of heaven. - John Milton
